100 Top Hospitals®: Cardiovascular Benchmarks for Success - 2003

Introduction

Cardiovascular disease is the number one killer in the United States, and cardiology care represents one of the most common and high profile of all hospital service lines. With more than 1,000 hospitals performing open-heart surgery, and hundreds more offering medical cardiology programs, this specialty is vital to hospital administrators, physicians, insurers, and patients.

Now in its fifth year, the Solucient 100 Top Hospitals®: Cardiovascular Benchmarks for Success study identifies hospitals that are setting benchmark levels of performance for cardiovascular services throughout the nation. This study is part of the Solucient 100 Top Hospitals® initiative, originally developed in 1993.

Introducing Complete Hospital Reporting
Hospitals must learn how to explain their performance so that the public can understand the value they bring to the community—and the underpinning of this reporting must be factual data that can be validated. Although the demand for public reporting is clearly growing, hospitals have done little to embrace the opportunities this trend brings—to help maximize hospitals’ opportunities for positive, fact-based, public reporting. With our 100 Top Hospitals studies, Solucient is the first to introduce this breakthrough paradigm shift.

In this study, we demonstrate, with real data, how hospitals can achieve complete reporting by analyzing benchmark data in two ways—one for internal hospital use, and one for public consumption.
