100 Top Hospitals®: Cardiovascular Benchmarks for Success - 2004

Introduction

Cardiovascular disease is the number one killer in the United States, and cardiology care represents one of the most common and high profile of all hospital service lines. With more than 1,000 hospitals performing open-heart surgery, and hundreds more offering medical cardiology programs, this specialty is vital to hospital administrators, physicians, insurers, and patients.

Now in its sixth year, the Solucient 100 Top Hospitals®: Cardiovascular Benchmarks for Success study identifies hospitals that are setting benchmark levels of performance for cardiovascular services throughout the nation. This study is part of the Solucient 100 Top Hospitals® initiative, originally developed in 1993.

Continuing the Quest for Complete Hospital Performance Reporting
In 2003, Solucient’s 100 Top Hospitals program pioneered the concept of complete hospital reporting. In addition to our long-standing tradition of performance measure reporting, with its proven value as an internal management tool, we added second layer of data: one that offers hospitals the ability to report the value of their services to their community.

In the current competitive health care environment, in which public reporting has become so important, hospitals MUST have the tools to share their good news with their communities. At the same time, they must continue to use data in traditional epidemiological forms so that they can investigate any exceptions they have to these positive outcomes. In every 100 Top Hospitals study, we provide hospitals with the basic tools for both types of reporting, by providing our benchmark data in both formats.
