100 Top Hospitals®: Cardiovascular
Benchmarks for Success — 2005

Findings

The aim of the 100 Top Hospitals: Cardiovascular Benchmarks for Success study is to provide benchmarks as a tool for performance improvement for use by all hospitals that provide cardiac care. The benchmarks themselves demonstrate levels of performance that can be achieved and serve as a target for peer hospitals.

Based on comparisons between the Solucient 100 Top Hospitals: Cardiovascular Benchmarks Hospitals and a peer group limited to similar high-volume hospitals, we estimate that:

  • If peer hospitals (non-winners) provided the same quality of care as the 100 Top hospitals, survival rates would increase by more than 10,000 patients each year.

  • Complications of care could also decrease in peer hospitals. More than 1,100 additional patients could be complication-free.

In this year’s Findings section, we:

  • Summarize our new findings about the wide variance in heart attack treatment in U.S. hospitals.

  • Discuss the mixed results cardiovascular hospitals are showing in post-operative complications.

  • Display data for complete hospital performance reporting. This expands the 100 Top benchmark analysis to provide positive performance data to share with hospitals' communities, and complements traditional benchmarks used for internal performance improvement.

  • Provide performance measure data, identifying differences between benchmark hospitals and their peers.
