100 Top Hospitals®:
Benchmarks for Success - 2002

Introduction

On this, the 10th anniversary of the 100 Top Hospitals program, we are proud to present an innovative addition to how we present benchmark hospital data. In addition to our time-tested performance measure reporting, with its proven value as an internal management tool, we have added a second layer—fact-based positive values for external reporting. The result is complete reporting method that we hope will inspire hospital decision makers to change the way they think about public reporting and create partnerships with physicians and their communities.

For 10 years, Solucient’s 100 Top Hospitals®: Benchmarks for Success program has been setting benchmarks for hospital performance by identifying the top achievers in the industry. With the 2002 100 Top Hospitals study, Solucient provides the latest snapshot of the ever-changing benchmarks set by the industry’s top performers, and once again describes what it takes to be a top performer.

We estimate that if all Medicare inpatients received the same level of care as those in the 100 Top Hospitals:

  • An additional 84,374 patients could survive each year.
  • More than 53,500 patient complications could be avoided each year.
  • Expenses could decline by an aggregate $10+ billion a year.

If the same standards were applied to all inpatients, the impact would be even greater.

With the 100 Top Hospitals: Benchmarks for Success program, Solucient has worked to increase the industry’s understanding of top hospital performance. By making hospitals aware of what kind of performance is possible, hospital CEOs and boards of trustees can set new targets for performance improvement across their organization. It is through this cycle that we hope to be a catalyst for continuous hospital performance improvement.
