Introduction

Since 1993, Solucient's 100 Top Hospitals®: Benchmarks for Success program has been identifying the top overall achievers in the industry. Through this work, we have acknowledged high-performing management teams and have worked to learn what drives their performance.

Now, with our latest initiative-The 100 Top Hospitals®: Performance Improvement Leaders study and awards-we attempt, for the first time, to identify hospital CEOs and senior management teams that have led their organizations to achieve the fastest rate of consistent annual organizational improvement.

By using objective statistical analysis of validated measures and comparing rates of improvement, Solucient has found that these management teams have:

• Developed an effective organization-wide culture of performance improvement
• Generated directionally correct, consistent organizational improvement over a five-year period at a significantly faster rate than peers.

The executives receiving Solucient's 100 Top Hospitals: Performance Improvement Leaders award are true leaders who have affected a culture of change in their organizations. This culture has been manifested by consistent performance improvement across key areas of the hospital.
