Top Hospitals: The Impetus for Change
In 1993, Solucient first launched an initiative
to identify the top hospitals in the United States based solely upon empirical findings
from publicly available performance data.
The objectives were:
to establish a baseline of performance given
a hospitals clinical business and the industrys financial limitations;
create performance benchmarks for
"like" institutions;
acknowledge the high-performing management
teams of 100 Top organizations.
The results generated performance benchmarks from which the
hospital industry now measures its success.
Since launching the first 100 Top Hospitals: Benchmarks
for Success study, Solucient has annually measured and analyzed the clinical and financial
rigors of the hospitals industry and honored more than 415 unique institutions.
The performance benchmarks have continually
improved for the group as a whole, annually setting new national standards by which
organizations and their management are viewed by both the industry and their local
communities.
Since the studys founding, deaths in
hospitals have decreased by 8.7 percent, complications have fallen by 16 percent,
inpatient lengths of stay have been reduced by 20 percent, costs per admission have
decreased 5 percent, and hospital profitability has increased 11.7 percent.
