HOW TO BECOME ONE OF THE THOMSON REUTERS 100 TOP HOSPITALS

Nearly every hospital has the chance to become one of the Thomson Reuters 100 Top Hospitals®. Here are some steps you can take to increase your odds.

STEP 1: Guarantee Your Inclusion in the Study

Every U.S. acute care hospital is a candidate for the 100 Top Hospitals award because the 100 Top Hospitals studies use only publicly available data (including the MedPAR billing file and the Medicare cost report.) Unfortunately, a number of hospitals are excluded each year because we don't have their most recent cost report.

We don't want any hospital to be unnecessarily excluded. To prevent this, your CFO can routinely e-mail a copy of your cost report (in ECR format) directly to th.providersupport@thomsonreuters.com when they submit it to your fiscal intermediary. Thomson Reuters will hold the hospital-submitted cost report as a temporary file until we receive the official version from the fiscal intermediary. If we don't receive a cost report from the fiscal intermediary when we run the 100 Top Hospitals study, we'll use the temporary Cost Report on file for our analysis, assuring your hospital's inclusion.

STEP 2: Obtain and Understand Your Performance Results

Click on the links below to order a report comparing your hospital's performance with 100 Top Hospitals winners.

Order a 100 Top Hospitals National or Cardiovascular Benchmarks Report and:

  • See how your hospital performed on the 100 Top Hospitals measures
  • Understand how you stack up against your peers and the 100 Top Hospitals winners
  • Learn your hospital's rate and consistency of performance improvement over five years (National Report only)

A Thomson Reuters representative can visit your hospital and provide a review of your report. To arrange such a visit, email Tracy Schalk at tracy.schalk@thomsonreuters.com or call us at +1 800 568 3282 (option 3).

STEP 3: Preparing Your Board, Executive Team and Physician Leadership for the Journey to Top Performance

Transparency will force great changes in your leadership team's thinking and behavior. Leaders must know how well aligned their own hospital's performance improvement efforts are with peer hospitals and be aware of the best board, management and clinical practices of top performing hospitals.

Boards, executive teams and physician groups can learn about their hospital's national position and comparative rate of improvement and hear about top performing hospital best practices. Jean Chenoweth, senior vice president, performance improvement and 100 Top Hospitals programs, Center for Healthcare Improvement, Thomson Reuters, is available for onsite board retreats and executive team meetings. Use these presentations to develop a common understanding of the major task ahead, strengthen commitment to improvement and better align the leadership team.
