The new 1998 100 Top Hospitals: Benchmarks for Success study abstract from HCIA and William M. Mercer, Incorporated, provides you with the important benchmarking standards and details necessary to help you better understand the industry’s evolving direction.

This noted annual study identifies hospitals throughout the U.S. and across multiple peer and comparison groups that excel at providing high-quality care, efficient operations, and superior financial results.

Important findings in this year’s study include indications that if all hospitals were to perform at the benchmark levels of the new 100 Top Hospitals, there would be dramatic declines in expenses, average inpatient lengths of stay, and mortality rates. There would also be overwhelming increases in profitability and return on assets. Only this abstract reveals the complete results of the study.

Study comparison groups include:

  • Small Hospitals, 25-99 acute care beds in service: 1,353 hospitals
  • Medium Hospitals, 100-249 acute care beds in service: 1,230 hospitals
  • Large Community Hospitals, 250 or more acute care beds in service: 245 hospitals
  • Teaching Hospitals, 250 or more acute care beds in service and at least 5 interns/residents or an intern/resident-per-bed ration between 0.01 and 0.24: 331
  • Major Teaching Hospitals, 400 or more acute care beds in service and an intern/resident-per-bed ratio of at least 0.25: 99

Performance measures within each comparison group reveal important benchmark numbers for:

  • Mortality
  • Complications
  • Average length of stay
  • Expenses
  • Profitability
  • Proportion of outpatient revenue
  • Total facility occupancy
  • Total asset turnover ratio

The 100 Top study abstract includes listings of all 100 top performers, notes on methodologies used, and easy-to-read graphs and tables showing how your peer group — as well as national and regional peer groups — compare against the newly established benchmarks.
