100 Top Hospital Award Winners
Initiate National Clinical Research Network
New Research Information Source for Medical Staff
and for Health Education of Patients and Community
First Study is on Effective Use of
Antibiotics
for Prevention of Wound Infections in Clean Surgical Cases
Baltimore, MD, March 10, 1999
HCIA L.L.C. (NASDAQ:HCIA) and current and past winners of the 100 Top
Hospitals award have joined forces to form the 100
Top Hospitals: Clinical Research Program. The program, the first of its
kind, applies epidemiological techniques to clinical treatment and outcomes across
hundreds of thousands of cases and provides the research results directly to the
participating hospitals for use by their medical staffs as well as for patient and
community health education. The first study, to be released later this month, examines the
effectiveness of the use of antibiotics to prevent wound infections in 100 Top
Hospitals and in a peer group of hospitals.
The 100 Top Hospitals: Clinical Research Program is the first ever attempt to
build a detailed clinical database comprised solely of high performance hospitals of
differing ownership, religious affiliation, teaching status, size, and alliance
affiliation. This program is intended to expand medical knowledge through its unique,
large-scale clinical research database, which extends well beyond the limitations of
publicly available government data files and uniform bill (UB-92) data.
Program hospitals are contributing detailed inpatient and outpatient treatment data,
while HCIA is converting the data into standardized usable information. HCIA expects to
deliver descriptions of actual treatment patterns across the United States at new levels
of clinical detail and with far greater accuracy than has previously been possible. HCIA
has committed to the production of a minimum of three national studies per year plus
development of clinical treatment and outcome benchmarks that will objectively reflect
current clinical practice in the United States.
"The 100 Top Hospitals: Clinical Research Program promises to place the
participating hospitals and their medical staff in community leadership positions in
bringing current treatment trends, health information, and education to patients,
employees, families, local employers, and even payers," said Jean Chenoweth, HCIA
senior vice president. "This is a natural evolution of the hospitals role in
promoting excellence in clinical care and wellness in the community."
HCIA and more than 110 current and past award-winning hospitals began development of
the program approximately one year ago. The results of the first clinical research study
are scheduled for release in March 1999. A list of all of the program hospitals and direct
links to their Web sites are available here.
