The 2000 100 Top Hospitals:
Orthopedic Benchmarks for Success abstract from HCIA-Sachs

This annual study identif ies the nation’s top orthopedic hospitals and sets a standard for management
teams throughout the country.
Important findings in this year’s study include indications that, compared with their peers,
orthopedic 100 Top Hospitals:
- have better better clinical outcomes in terms of mortality and complications;
- have lower costs;
- maintain shorter lengths of stay;
discharge a greater percentage of
patients home or to home health agencies
Study comparison groups include:
- teaching hospitals with orthopedic
residency programs
teaching hospitals
community hospitals
Performance measures within each comparison group reveal important benchmark numbers
for:
- risk-adjusted
mortality index;
- risk-adjusted
complications
index;
- count of patients receiving
orthopedic services;
- percentage of
patients
discharged to home;
- severity-adjusted
average length of stay;
- wage- and
severity-adjusted average cost.
