Benchmarks for Success 2000
Introduction
HCIA-Sachs and The Human
Motion InstituteSM
are proud to release the 2000 100 Top Hospitals:
Orthopedic Benchmarks for Success.
Orthopedic services are some of the most widely
rendered in the United States. Virtually all U.S. hospitals provide some
level of orthopedic care, and nearly 4,600 provide major orthopedic
services. Despite the volume of orthopedic care being provided, patient
experience varies greatly; there is wide variation in the length of time
a patient remains in the hospital and the aggressiveness of their path
to recovery. And while most orthopedic treatments and procedures would
not be considered "life or death," they certainly rank high on
the quality-of-life scale. As such, they are coming under increased
scrutiny from patients, physicians, and insurers. The
models that we at the Institute developed to produce the 100 Top
HospitalsTM studies use empirical, publicly available performance
data to identify hospitals that excel in their clinical practices,
operations, and financial management. By identifying benchmark hospitals
that provide high-quality care, operate efficiently, and produce
superior financial results, we offer the health care industry a
direction for positive change.
In this second orthopedics study, we have changed our
methodology and expanded the scope of our benchmarks in both detail and
number in order to increase the amount and depth of information
available to hospitals. We have added clinical benchmarks for specific
diseases and procedures.
Given the highly technical nature of orthopedic
services, it is unrealistic to expect all hospitals to be able to
conform to the benchmark standards. But the desire to increase awareness
for the industry and raise the bar for acceptable outcomes across the
country is realistic. Our hope is to accomplish this and narrow the gap
between the top performers and the industry at large.
